"She might be modeling for Calvin Klein in between cutting tracks and putting up gigs, but Icelandic siren Moa is no lightweight. Possessing a voice that reminds you of Gwen Stephanie from No Doubt but with more style and depth, she delivers her debut album"Universal"with sparks and verve. What this young upstart doesn't have is the originality or the vocal prowess of Bjork who can still safely retain her throne as Iceland's premier exponent of Electronica.Moa's first single"Memory Cloud"has already made a healthy impression on dance charts. Other standout tracks include"Can't Forget You,"which kicks into a deadly groove as Moa pulls out her sensuousness to heat things up."Tenderly"sounds like an Ella Fitzgerald tune all set up to fester, while"Raining In My Heart"has a joyful retro feel. However, Moa suffers one setback: Her lyrics are stilted and simplistic. Fortunately, with Eythor Arnalds throwing out jazz-pop backdrops and bluesy riffs, the album still provides an earful of catchy and compelling music. By the way, the review CD contains three extra remixes and a new track"You Only Live Twice"taken from an old James Bond movie. With her Uma Thurmanish looks and aloof vocals, maybe she is already auditioning to be the next Bond Girl."
